STANFORD’S KLS RESEARCH PROGRAM SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR GENETIC AND VIRAL STUDIES
To reach the goal of the Stanford University KLS genetic and viral research studies, we need to continue recruiting as many KLS patients as possible. Only patients with typical KLS symptoms are being sought, to reduce the possibility of a false diagnosis. These patients and their parents (if willing) are asked to complete a detailed questionnaire.
In addition, for the genetic study, a blood sampling kit is sent and volunteers are asked to arrange to get blood drawn and returned to the Stanford University research lab (at our expense using a prepaid FedEx mailer). This is a simple procedure that can be done in a few minutes at your physician’s office or a local hospital blood lab.
Individuals with KLS who typically (though not necessarily always) experience flu-like symptoms prior to, or at the beginning of, a KLS episode may also be sent a sampling kit for a nasal and throat swab. It is most important for participating patients to follow up and return these materials, as it is very costly to have incomplete files and unreturned kits.
